A Springtime Wildlife Adventure: Exploring Madrona Marsh

The session with the Great Egret was a once in a lifetime occurrence, ruined by an innocent, but unruly child without parental supervision. I was laying on the ground taking epic images of this bird, when out of nowhere, this child comes running up to the water's edge, screaming and throwing sticks at the Egret. I knew the child had no clue what just happened, but the horrendously scornful look I gave the parents in the distance hopefully communicated my displeasure.

After reviewing the images, I am over the moon with the quality and quantity of excellent wild life shots I took, that will surely make my portfolio happy. Of course, all this activity is a reminder of the importance of protecting our natural world. Madrona Marsh is a precious resource, and we must do everything we can to preserve it for future generations.

April 27, 2024 was a beautiful spring day in the South Bay. After a spontaneous trip to the Marsh a week prior, I pressured my girl to bring out the cameras for a full day in the swamp.

We saw a bunch of birds amongst the wild flowers and swamp.

We observed geese feeding with their families.

There was a pair of Great Egrets feeding in the open, seemingly apathetic to the other birds and their activities.

There was a soap opera occurring with a duck couple and an alpha duck, that was hilarious to watch.

After watching all of the bird drama for a while, we moved deeper into the bush. There were some fleeting glimpses of squirrels and bunnies. I managed to snag a few portraits of them.

I was astonished to come to a moody clearing where a lone, Great Egret was hunting in the swamp. The swamp was covered in a florescent green algae, but the Egret was somehow able to pear through and score a direct hit to a baby frog.
